Michael Cole, NY

Spin and Trusted (2005-2006) are from the 24 Hour News Cycle series and are a meditation on the televised news media. Spin uses as a structural motif, the early Robert Rauschenberg painting, 22 Lilywhite in which a rough honeycomb pattern encases either numbers or text. For these works Michael created separate paintings by building up layer upon layer of digital paint, taking care to highlight the coarse impasto feel of the original oil on canvas work. The digital painting is layered on top of sections of CNN's American Morning.
